Hi, I’m Serene. I’m born and bred in Penang and was pursuing a Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) in Chung Ling Private High School before tertiary education.

It had always been my dream to further my studies in United Kingdom. Why the United Kingdom? The fact that I’m deeply into somewhere apart thousands of miles is intriguing. Cliché not I always tell others that United Kingdom is my utopia, a place to explore the endless possibilities of life. No doubt the UK has impressive international academic reputation which draws the attention of applicants all over the world. In addition, the culture and historical background of UK fascinates me.

So why did I choose the University of Leeds? I don’t mean to sound like a parent but it’s because it is a Russell Group University and is Top 100 in global ranking. The university is also the Top five universities targeted by employers in the UK. Furthermore, the Leeds University Business School is triple accredited which only about 1% of all business schools around the world are. The course I’m studying – BSc Accounting and Finance has good performance in all league tables and it is a plus point that the programme carries exemptions from professional bodies.

The atmosphere in the University of Leeds is welcoming and friendly, which makes me feel like I’m home. I’ve heard so much about societies and activities when I was a prospective student and now as a current student, I can assure you that’s true! There are more than 300 clubs and societies, as well as a jam-packed calendar of events, festivals, trips and sports matches. Also, the Business School’s architecture is absolutely stunning, the lecture halls are equipped with world class facilities and we have a state-of-the-art fitness centre. I fell in love with the campus vibe since the first time I’ve stepped into it – it makes me feel like I’m going to be a business elite in no time.

The amount of support and opportunities that are available is astounding, from Academic Personal Tutor, Mentoring Scheme, to Study Abroad and Work Placement definitely enhance my whole university experience. We also have the Career Centre which helps students by providing advice and career support.

The university has over 12,000 international students from over 130 countries, making our campus one of the most diverse and multicultural in the UK. Studying at the University of Leeds has given me the opportunity to meet and make friends with people from different background, making my experience truly unique.

Here I am standing in front of one of my favourite places in the university - Leeds University Union. It's a place where you can meet, work, socialise and relax. There's a range of shops, cafes, bars and spaces to sit and you can find yourself in there indulging for the whole day
