Studied in University of Reading

Environmental Science

Course trip with my department

It has always been a dream of mine to study abroad and experience new culture, environment and meeting people from different walks of life. I chose Reading as my University of choice because of the good education it provides for my degree and its’ strategic location. It is a small town that has a big university campus, high street shops, an iKEA and is only less than 30 minutes from London. I would have chosen a University in London but knowing me, I would be easily distracted by the hustle and bustle of the city. Getting my degree was the main goal and minimal distraction was what I needed.

First day of University

Some of the fondest memories I had during my time in Reading was definitely the people. I had the opportunity to work in one of the best cafes in the University and made a lot of new friends and colleagues along the way. Daily tasks of serving coffees and teas and housekeeping work were bearable with fair treatment from my manager and staffs despite having to wake up early and brave the cold weather. My manager, Leanne was the kindest person I ever met and always taking care of her staffs well-being. As a Muslim student, she understands that I have to go for my prayers in between shifts and does not allow me to serve alcohol. Having a manager that also understands your religion is impossible to find and I am grateful to have cross path with Leanne. The Head of Department of my school also understands my religion. During our class field trip to Chobham Common, he came to me personally regarding room assignments as he knew I would be more comfortable to have a private room to take off my hijab and advised the chef at the site to serve Halal meal. I knew there and then that my decision choosing Reading was the best one I made.

Home visits programme

Even though I am not pursuing a career in Environmental Science at the moment, I would love to join a non-profit organizations such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenpeace to help them achieve a greener future. I also would love to use a digital platform in the future to educate the society on fast fashion and encourage a more sustainable lifestyle. Using the knowledge and experiences I gained from Reading, I was able to secure a corporate job a few months after graduation and hoping to achieve more career goals in the near future.

If time travelling machine existed, I would definitely travel back to my university days and relive the moments.
