Actuarial Science

Many people may wonder why I chose to study Actuarial Science at Queen Mary University of London, even though there are other universities in the UK that offer the same programme. Initially, I was hesitant about my decision, but these past years have made me realise that this was the best choice for me. Today, I would like to share the reasons why I am so certain with my decision to study Actuarial Science at this university.

Firstly, the Actuarial Science program at Queen Mary University of London is accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). This accreditation allows students to receive exemptions for six out of seven core principle papers upon meeting the requirements. This is a significant advantage for those aspiring to become associate and fellow actuaries, as these exemptions will shorten the journey to becoming a qualified actuary.

Personally, I am a person who finds peace and tranquillity in nature’s beauty. Fortunately, Queen Mary University of London offers an exceptional spot with breathtaking view: Regent’s Canal, Mile End. I always enjoy having my packed lunch there and even studying by the canalside on the ground floor, taking in the soothing view while I learn. This setting greatly relaxes my mind and creates the best environment to study.

In addition, the lecturers at Queen Mary University of London are highly experienced. Many of my lecturers are actuaries who have also worked in the industry. I greatly appreciate this because they are people who, during the lecture, casually drop some advice on preparing for interviews and things we should expect when working in this industry. I am excited to attend class since I am eager to take note of every piece of advice that comes from them. Before I started studying actuarial science, I had the misconception that actuaries were only involved in life and general insurance. However, my lecturers have given me exposure to various other fields that actuaries can work in, such as data science, sustainability, and risk management. This exposure has encouraged me to explore these diverse areas, and thus, led me to becoming a credit risk intern in London during the summer break. This experience provided me with invaluable insights that have prepared me for the real-world industry.

The support system at Queen Mary University of London is amazing. There are various channels available to help students, both academically and with their mental well-being. For example, students can always come to lecturers’ office hours, join a buddy scheme, get help from seniors in the PASS program, and join an online space called Learning Cafe during exam season.

Overall, I am more than happy to have been given the opportunity to pursue my degree at Queen Mary University of London. I am thankful for the great environment to study, the supportive lecturers and staff, and the diverse range of opportunities available to students. Therefore, I am more than grateful for studying here in Queen Mary University of London, and I know that this place will always hold a special place in my heart.
