Wong Jhing Mern joined the University of Sheffield in 2019 as a winner of an Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, an award which recognises and rewards academic excellence. In this quick fire Q&A she shares her experiences of the university and Sheffield and why she’s fallen head over heels for her new home.
“If your goals and visions are aligned with the University’s, don’t hesitate. As a proud student of our University, I have fallen head over heels for everything Sheffield embodies, for it has provided me with the platform I need to better myself.”
As an environment advocate, I knew what questions I wanted answers to and so I tailored my research accordingly. I won’t shy away from admitting that I’ve “stalked” the University’s social media accounts to get a glimpse of the in-and-outs of the University. I deduced that their vision for a better future was truly translated into actions after watching videos of students working to tackle pressing global issues. I was also particularly thrilled when the University held an offer holder’s talk in Malaysia where I had the pleasure of meeting one of the International Student Recruitment Managers, who shed light on the kind of learning environment that is cultivated and nurtured in the University.
Flying across the globe, I arrived rather discombobulated. However, I realise how quickly I have grown accustomed to life here. I truly believe both the University and the Students’ Union have done an amazing job at giving students the opportunities to attempt new things, meet different people, and explore uncharted territories, all of which help eased my transition into Sheffield. A month into the academic year, I discovered one of the many things I adore about the University, the multitude of safe-haven platforms students can engage with.
While I’m not the biggest fan of UK weather, the serenity and tranquillity fill me with peace and joy whenever I explore the beautiful landscapes of Sheffield. I love how culturally diverse Sheffield is and I have a more adventurous palate now! The people I’ve come across have been absolute gems: so friendly, kind and sweet.
On weekends, I never have to worry about what to do. There is an abundance of activities to partake in, bouldering, hiking, café hopping, exploring all of the UK under the Give It A Go programmes and so much more. Every day in Sheffield, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to behold the beautiful sight before me.
It can be intimidating when you’re faced with so many options and the only certainty is the uncertainty each decision carries. So, believe in yourself and the decisions you make, if those decisions are carried out with passion, nothing is a mistake.
I often remind myself, “To get ahead, we must first get started.” I can say with absolute certainty and pride that I don’t regret starting this new adventure of mine with the University of Sheffield. Passion will propel you in the direction that is good for you and the right foundation and university will navigate you when you are lost.
