Why Sheffield?
The University of Sheffield is well-known to possess a strong academic reputation, consistently ranking among the world’s top 100 universities. Particularly its law school is equipped with dedicated lecturers who are experts in their fields. There is also the opportunity to get involved in their pro bono legal clinics which allows you to develop transferrable skills by serving clients weekly. They also have a wide array of partnership universities where you can do a year abroad which allows you to experience studying in a different country, ultimately helping you achieve more personal growth and make life-long friends from all over the world!
Sheffield is also one of the cheapest cities to live in in the UK. The average rent is much lower than in other cities in the South. The financial assistance that the university provides in the form of scholarships also makes studying in Sheffield much more affordable.
Sheffield consists of a great balance between the city-life and countryside experience. Some of my favourite things to do include going on a picnic in one of their beautiful parks such as Weston Park or the Sheffield Botanical Gardens as well as hiking in the Peak Districts. The views from the Peak District are some of the most amazing sights I have ever witnessed! I also enjoy going to the city to do some shopping or going to the pub for a drink with my friends.
There is a wide range of clubs and societies which can fit anyone’s preferences. I personally have joined the Malaysian and Singaporean Society, Edward Bramley Law Society, the dodgeball club and the squash club. Being on the committee of these societies is also a great opportunity to enrich your university life and develop more skills. My personal preference is playing in the BUCS University Squash League where I go around to different universities every week to compete. This is such a great way to see different cities nearby as well as make many new friends.
I have personally had such a great time at the University of Sheffield even during the COVID-19 period, hence I would definitely recommend anyone thinking of coming to study here to give it a shot! My best piece of advice for any freshers joining the University of Sheffield would be to have an open mind going in and be willing to step out of your comfort zone to participate in all sorts of activities, as that will definitely make for a fruitful university experience.
