Studied in The University of Sheffield
Bachelor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering
Hi, I am Lee Zing Siang. I studied both Bachelor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. I decided to study in the U.K. because I wanted to experience different cultures and lifestyles. I wasn’t disappointed. For example, the cold weather is like a free “air-con” service three quarters of the year. There is also a bit of rain every now and then. This is often called the “British weather” when one feels like complaining.
I also picked up cycling in the U.K. because it saves transportation costs and improves fitness. The cold weather also helps because that means I wouldn’t be sweaty and smelly when attending lectures or meetings. Sheffield is also a very interesting place. The city seems so diverse and international that sometimes I felt like I was at home.
I have chosen to study in The University of Sheffield because it has a great reputation in the mechanical engineering field. For mechanical engineering students, there are also numerous opportunities to participate and explore, such as, the Sheffield Formula Racing, the Railway Challenge, Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience, a year in industry, iForge etc. These activities or programmes give the students an opportunity to expose themselves to an industrial setting and gather valuable work experience. On top of it, the Sheffield Students’ Union also ranked the top in the U.K. for many years because it has an extensive range of helpful services to help and guide the students when they have troubles or need help from career to personal welfare. They also offer a lot of activities and short courses (and Day Trips!) run at beginners’ level as part of their Give-it-a-Go scheme.
There are many good memories while I was studying in Sheffield. No doubt it was one of the best chapters in my life and I haven’t regretted taking this decisive step to further my study abroad.
