Top 25 university

The University of Portsmouth is in the Top 25 position in the The Guardian University Guide 2019 – the fifth straight year it has climbed the rankings.

Teaching quality and student experience

The University is a top 30 UK university for teaching quality and student experience, according to The Times Good University Guide 2019.

The University is 51st in the 2019 Complete University Guide, rising five places from 2018.

Teaching and internationalisation

QS World University Rankings gave the University of Portsmouth five stars for excellence in teaching and internationalisation.

Student satisfaction

The 2018 National Student Survey (NSS) puts the University of Portsmouth in the top 15% of UK universities for student satisfaction, with a score of 88%.

Career services

Student Crowd 2017 puts the University of Portsmouth in the top 20 Best Universities for Career Services.

Graduates in work or further study

97.5% of its graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey 2017.

How the University of Portsmouth benefits the local economy

The University employs 2,550 full-time staff, making it Portsmouth’s fourth largest employer, after the Royal Navy, Portsmouth NHS Trust and the City Council.

In 2015/16:

This is what the University of Portsmouth did for the local economy

  • Generated £624 million in the Solent region and £476 million in Portsmouth, adding more than £1.1 billion to the UK economy
  • Supported 9,300 jobs in the Solent region and 7,900 jobs in Portsmouth
  • Made a significant contribution to the local visitor economy, adding an estimated £5.5 million value to the economy and supporting more than 230 jobs
  • Invested £10 million in the local economy, supporting more than 170 jobs
  • The University’s Open Days alone generated £1.5 million for the city

This is what the University’s students added through spending, part-time and volunteering

  • £209.5 million and supported 4,733 jobs in the Solent region
  • £180.6 million and supported 4,270 jobs in Portsmouth

This is what the University’s overseas students and their friends and family added

  • Around £64 million in local businesses, supporting almost 600 jobs in the local area

Benefits to the UK economy

Here are the highlights from 2015/16* of how the University made a financial contribution to the UK:

  • Its graduates added £420 million in value to the UK economy as a result of the skills they learnt while studying at the University of Portsmouth
  • The University generated £46.9 million in added value for the UK economy
  • The University’s spending on goods and services supported 797 jobs across the UK
  • The University paid 4,129 members of staff a total of £148.1 million – their spending added £118.4 million in value to the UK economy and supported 2,095 jobs
  • Through capital investment, the University added £27 million in value and supported 378 jobs in the UK economy
  • The University added £2.7 million in value to the UK economy through its various Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), which translates its student and staff knowledge and research into benefits for industry
