The term ‘pathway providers’ are used for institutions that offer courses for students (mainly high school leavers) looking to upgrade their English language and/or subject study skills. The modules offered in these establishments will usually involve combinations of modules that focus on improving students’ level of English as well as academic knowledge related to specific areas of study.
These pre-university courses typically run for 9 to 12 months, and students would enrol in these prior to starting Year 1 of their undergraduate degrees. You can do a Foundation course in a variety of areas, depending on which degree you aim to pursue. There are various types of institutions that offer these courses. You can study in private schools like Brooke House College or d’Overbroeck’s Oxford which cater for students intending to study in the UK from GCSE onwards, through to Foundation or A-Levels. These schools offer strong community feels as well as boarding and pastoral care for their students.
Another option of pathway providers are sixth form independent colleges that offer A-Levels and foundation courses to students. A few examples of this are Bellerbys College, CATS College, MPW (Mander Portman Woodward) and Oxford Sixth Form College. These providers usually have campuses all over the UK, and students are offered excellent accommodation options managed by private companies.
A further option for students seeking post-high school qualification offered by pathway providers are private companies that have partnership with many of the UK universities offering vast selection of pre-university courses. These companies both run their own centres as well as collaborating with institutions of higher educations. They are able to cater for students who come from diverse academic backgrounds. Students can choose to apply with Cambridge Education Group, INTO, Kaplan, Navitas, Oxford International Education Group, StudyGroup – all of which have successfully delivered their programmes for more than a decade. They also have the options of study centres within a university – which usually guarantees entry to that particular institution – or a standalone centre which offers extensive picks of universities to transfer to.
